Commedia dell’arte, meaning “professional comedy,” was an early form of professional theater that originated in Italy and gained popularity in Europe from the 16th to the 18th century. Commedia dell’arte was originally known as Italian comedy in English and also goes by names such as commedia alla maschera, commedia improvviso, and commedia dell’arte all’improvviso. This form of theater is characterized by masked “types” and played a crucial role in the emergence of actresses and improvised performances based on sketches or scripts.
