Did you know that the tradition of court Jesters dates back to ancient Egypt? Dwarfs were often found entertaining the pharaoh and his courtiers during feasts or banquets. They performed comical gestures, juggled, and told jokes. Similar traditions involving jesters existed in ancient Persia, India, China, and Japan. Jesters were often individuals with unique physical characteristics, such as dwarfs, hunchbacks, eunuchs, or those with disabilities. These jesters played an essential role in entertaining royal courts.

The tradition of court jesters spread throughout Europe during the Middle Ages, likely influenced by the Crusades. However, as the Enlightenment era began, jesters gradually disappeared from European royal courts, starting in the 17th century in England and later in the 18th century across the continent. Nevertheless, the tradition continued in China and the Ottoman Empire until the early 20th century.

Some jesters also became renowned as diplomats or advisers to monarchs. For instance, Mossén Borro (real name Antonio Talander) served at the court of Emperor Sigismund, and Jan Paleček was a jester and courtier of Jiří from Poděbrady. Notable figures like the magician and wizard Žito found employment at the court of King Wenceslas IV. Many stories recount the pranks, wisdom, and wit of these eccentric personalities, which have been passed down through the ages.
